Paris is surrounded by rewarding towns, villages, gardens and coastal places. The closer choices below fit comfortably into a conventional day trip; Honfleur and Cherbourg demand substantially more travel time and are separated as longer days out.

These seven places have verified journey times of 90 minutes or less from Paris.
Oise, Hauts-de-France
Choose Chantilly for a château-centred day: the Musée Condé, 115 hectares of gardens and the Great Stables sit within one estate. A direct TER from Gare du Nord takes about 30 minutes, followed by a forest walk or local shuttle.

Moret-sur-Loing rewards a slower day beside the Loing, with fortified gates and streets associated with the painter Alfred Sisley. Trains from Gare de Lyon reach Moret-Veneux-les-Sablons in about 45 minutes; the old town is another 1.5 km away.

Chartres pairs its cathedral and medieval upper town with lanes descending to the River Eure and its washhouses. Direct Rémi trains from Montparnasse take under an hour, making the city practical for a full cultural day.

Senlis offers a compact historic centre framed by cathedral architecture and surviving Gallo-Roman walls. Reaching it without a car requires a train-and-bus connection, so the day benefits from checking the correct weekday or weekend route.

Giverny is best planned around Monet’s house and gardens during their April-to-November season. The journey combines a Saint-Lazare train to Vernon-Giverny with the seasonal shuttle for the final 6 km.

Barbizon is a painters’ village at the edge of Fontainebleau forest, with its museum and a compact main street. Public transport involves line R to Fontainebleau-Avon and bus 3421, whose Sunday service is limited and seasonal.

Provins is the most complete medieval excursion in the collection, with ramparts, underground passages and the Tour César. Direct line P trains leave Paris Est, although announced autumn 2026 weekend works require checking alternatives.

Calvados, Normandy
Honfleur’s Vieux Bassin, timber church and Seine-estuary views justify an early start, but the town has no railway station. Allow about 2 hours 50 minutes each way by train and NOMAD coach, or about 2 hours 15 minutes by car.

Cherbourg centres a maritime day on La Cité de la Mer, the former transatlantic terminal and Le Redoutable submarine. The direct NOMAD Krono Plus journey takes 3 hours 14 minutes each way, so an overnight gives the town far more breathing room.
